Devon MP to chair select committee

Neil Parish, MP for Tiverton and Honiton, has been elected as Chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Select Committee after being the sole candidate nominated for the post.

Nominations for the election of Select Committee Chairs closed at 5pm on Wednesday 10th June. The full results of the elections for all committees will be announced on Thursday 18th June.

Devon physio to compete in World Dragon Boat Racing Championships

AN NHS physiotherapist from East Devon has been selected to compete for Great Britain in the 2015 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Canada – just two years after taking up the sport.

Sue Bath, a musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy team lead for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, said she was ‘overweight and unfit’ when she moved to the area in 2013.

She did an internet search for ‘things to do in Exeter’, joined the Exe-Calibre Dragon Boat Club soon after and hasn’t looked back since.

Ring & Ride celebrates 25 years

Ring & Ride services in Devon celebrated their 25th anniversary at a special event on Sunday 17 May.

More than 200 guests who are involved with the service were invited to a Silver Jubilee celebration which was held at Seale Hayne in Newton Abbot.

Ring & Ride was set up in response to new legislation at the time which gave local authorities powers to meet the travel needs of elderly and disabled people, and in April 1990, Honiton became the first market town in Devon to launch a Ring & Ride service.

A qualified medical herbalist from East Devon will be sharing her knowledge of everyday foods and their health benefits with visitors at this weekend’s River Cottage Spring Food Fair.

Jayne Palmer from Roots to Health is giving a talk based on a quote from Hippocrates: "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food". She will explain how common ingredients like onion, garlic and fennel contribute to a healthy diet and how, in concentrated form, they can have medicinal uses.

Police name two found dead in East Devon

Two people have been named following the discovery of two bodies at a home in Axminster on Sunday (10 May).

They have been named as Jane McCartney aged 59 from the Dalwood area of East Devon, and Graham McCartney aged 63 from Honiton.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the tragic deaths of this couple, but are not looking for any other persons in relation to the incident.

Family members have been made aware of their deaths and are being supported by specially trained police family liaison officers.

A six-year-old boy and his mum and dad today became the first family in the South West to take part in ground-breaking DNA research at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E) to help fight rare health conditions.

Game on for Honiton's petanque pitch

East Devon District Council has been working hard with Honiton Town Council and local resident Chris Bigmore on a project that has ended up providing residents with a new petanque 'terrain' or playing area.
