Police warn shopkeepers of 'ringing the changes' scam

Police are issuing a warning to shopkeepers and cashiers following reports of a so-called ‘ringing the changes’ scam operating across Devon and Cornwall.

Suspects have entered post offices, building societies, shops and even restaurants wanting to exchange notes to different denominations.

They then attempt to confuse till staff and while the staff are distracted, use sleight of hand in an attempt to steal cash.

Incidents have been reported in a Helston supermarket, a Lynmouth shop and a Plymouth restaurant.

Update: A man with links ot Exeter, who had gone missing from Sawbridgeworth, has been found safe.

Sixty-nine-year-old year old Michael Ashton was last seen at his home address on August 6. Michael was found in the local area this morning (August 8).

Police thanked members of the public and the media are thanked for their assistance.

Police operation helps to identify pit bull-type dogs sold by convicted breeders

Operation Doorstop Two was set up following the arrest of Stephen and Tracey Tewkesbury in relation to the selling of Pit Bull-type dogs, for which they have since been convicted. The purpose of the operation was to identify dogs sold by the couple and mitigate any risk they presented to the community. The operation has now concluded and a total of 42 addresses have been visited, which has resulted in 26 dogs have being seized (2 from the Exeter area); this excludes the three seized from Mr and Mrs Tewkesbury.

Police promise to hold perpetrators of violent disorder in Teignmouth to account

Police in Teignmouth are currently investigating a large scale disorder which took place in Northumberland Place in the early hours of Sunday 4 August. It is believed up to 15 people were involved in the disorder, some of whom had been inside Kools nightclub prior to the disorder breaking out. Local officers responded to the incident at around 2pm but due to scale and numbers involved had serious concerns for their safety and had to deploy captor spray. 24-year-old female cyclist dies after colliding with a house in Branscombe

Update 6 August: The female cyclist has now been named as Rebecca Scott, aged 24 and from the Exeter area.

5 August: A 24-year-old woman from Exeter has died after sustaining serious injuries when her bike collided with a house in the centre of Branscombe. The incident occured at around 2.15pm on Saturday 3 August 2013, when she was descending a hill into the centre of Branscombe from the Beer direction when she collided with a house. The woman died at the scene from her injuries.

The woman's next of kin have been notified. Further updates to follow.

Police call for witnesses to Plymouth stabbing

Police in Plymouth are investigating after a man in his 20s suffered stab wounds in an incident in Staddon Terrace Lane in the city.

The incident took place at around 1pm Monday 5 August. A number of police vehicles and ambulances attended the scene.

The victim, who has not yet officially been named, was taken to hospital by ambulance where it was confirmed that he had received three stab wounds to the shoulder, abdomen and thigh. His injuries are not thought to be life changing or life threatening.

Motorcyclist dies after collision with a car in Paignton

Police were called to a road traffic collision which occurred just prior 2am this morning (Sunday 4 August) on Kings Ash Road in Paignton. The collision occurred between a small hatchback car and a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a 19-year-old man from Buckfast, was treated by paramedics who attended the scene and medical staff at Torbay hospital but tragically died later this morning.

Devon and Cornwall Police are warning users and potential users of so called ‘legal highs’ of the risks particularly with the summer influx of tourists and festivals.

The new psychoactive substances (NPS), or ‘legal highs’ as they are more commonly known, are easily purchased online or in high street shops often labelled as novelty items or research chemicals. They also include a label ‘not for human consumption’ to get around legislation and misrepresent their true intended use.

Search continues for missing Exeter pensioner Alma Royle

This morning, 31 July, a large group of police officers were deployed to the St Thomas area of Exeter to continue the search for missing Exeter pensioner Alma Royle, aged 83. Police were tasked with carrying out an extended search of the area 1km from where she went missing in Heron Way, St Thomas. They are set to continue for the remainder of the day, with members of the Dartmoor Rescue Group continuing to assist with evening searches.

Update 29 July 2pm: Police have released two more photographs of Alma Royle, which were taken in the local Co-op store on Dunsford Road on the day she went missing (Friday 26 July).

29 July 7.20am: Alma Royle, last seen in Heron Way, St Thomas, is still missing and Police are increasingly concerned for her safety. They have enlisted the help of mountain rescue teams to help find her, but are also asking the public to keep their eyes open.
