Exeter Chiefs may be gearing up for a busy festive period of fixtures, but today members of the first-team squad took a morning out to pay a special festive visit to the Bramble Children’s Unit at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.

Celebration of Clinical Research 2015 at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust

Members of the public are invited to an exhibition of clinical research currently being undertaken by clinicians at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, the leading research hospital in the South West Peninsula.

The event takes place on 5th November from 11.30am-1pm in the Research Innovation, Learning and Development (RILD) building on the hospital’s Wonford site. Cardiac arrest survival rates high at RD&E

Well over a third of patients who suffered cardiac arrest at the RD&E Hospital in Exeter last year survived and were later discharged from hospital compared to 18% nationally, a clinical study has found. The latest National Cardiac Arrest Audit Report compared hospital cardiac arrest survival data for the period April-December 2014. Some 37.5% of patients at the RD&E survived and were later discharged compared to a national average of 18.4% at hospitals across England. Melissa Phillips, a nurse on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, has won the award for Returnee to Practice of the Year in Devon and Cornwall at the Health Education South West Awards (HESW).

The inaugural awards, hosted by HESW at a ceremony in Taunton, celebrated the huge contribution made by nurses, midwives and health visitors who have completed their journey back to practice after time away from the NHS.

Melissa recently returned to nursing after spending seven years away from the profession.

Donation will help children with bowel diseases

Exeter families whose children have Inflammatory Bowel Diseases such as Crohn’s or Colitis can now receive extra help with the costs of travelling for treatment thanks to a £2,000 donation from the Exeter Crohn's and Colitis Committee.

Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). They affect parts of the digestive system, which includes the intestines or bowels, which can become sore and inflamed.

Hospital Radio Exeter wins lottery funding

Hospital Radio Exeter has been awarded £7,690 in funding by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund.

The volunteer run radio station which is based at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital in Exeter currently provides more than 40 hours per week of varied programmes including the famous request shows to hospital patients.

FORCE announce new patron

Martin Cooper, former head of cancer services in Exeter, has been appointed as the new patron of FORCE.

Mr Cooper retired as Medical Director at the Royal Devon and Exeter Foundation Trust in March.

He becomes only the third patron of the Exeter cancer charity after former diplomat Sir Anthony Parsons and FORCE co-founder Chris Rowland, who died last year.

New outpatient pharmacy opens at RD&E

Patients at the Royal Devon and Exeter (RD&E) hospital can now benefit from a more convenient outpatient prescription service thanks to a new Boots pharmacy which has opened its doors to the public. The new Boots UK outpatient pharmacy service is located on the ground floor in the main hospital corridor. The dispensary will enhance patients’ experience while visiting the hospital, help to reduce waiting times and free up RD&E pharmacy staff to focus on inpatient care.

New ECG machine for RD&E

Senior Research Nurse Lizze Davey and friend Jemma Marsh have donated an Electrocardiogram (ECG) machine to Okement Ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The pair raised £8,000 by completing the London Marathon last year, a total which has been split between funding the ECG machine and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) charity Crohn's and Colitis UK.
