HR directors from major regional and national businesses gathered in Exeter to hear the latest news from the CBI on 17 October.

Hosted by South West law firm Stephens Scown LLP, the event took place at its Exeter offices and saw Neil Carberry, the CBI’s Director responsible for Employment and Skills discuss holiday pay - a major emerging issue for employers. Devon law firm top performer in influential student guide

A Devon solicitor’s firm has been named as one of the best for work/life balance in the country, according to an influential student guide to the law. Stephens Scown LLP has also picked up the most awards of any firm in the region in the latest Lex 100 results, which allow trainee solicitors to give candid comments about their firms.

The Lex 100 guide for 2013/14 is based on responses from over 3,500 trainee solicitors at 230 of the UK’s largest law firms. Stephens Scown was ranked number 4 in the UK in terms of enabling trainees to achieve a good work/life balance.

One of Devon’s leading legal firms has been given the top ranking for two of its teams by independent guide to the legal profession, Legal 500 2014, which was published on 1 October.

Surge in trade mark filing signals boom in Devon business growth

A surge in trade mark filings indicates that Devon companies are continuing to perform well following the challenges of the last few years, according to a leading intellectual property lawyer.

Stephens Scown LLP has filed 55 per cent of all trade marks filed by professionals in Devon and Cornwall this year. To date the firm’s intellectual property and IT team has filed 90 UK/EU trade mark applications on behalf of its clients, covering everything from motorsports equipment to food and drink products.

A leading South West law firm has been shortlisted for two prestigious industry awards.

Stephens Scown LLP, which has offices in Exeter, Truro and St Austell has been shortlisted for the Modern Law Awards in the Law Firm of the Year and Client Care Initiative of the Year categories. The winners will be announced at an event in London on 15 October.

Exeter legal firm sees income soar

An award winning South West law firm has seen its income grow by 12%.

Stephens Scown LLP, which is based in Exeter, has increased its income to £13.5 million – a growth of 12% – in the year ended 30 April 2014. This growth doubles the rise of 6% seen in the previous financial year and will enable the firm to pay out, on average, a firm-wide bonus in excess of 3% to all eligible employees.

Since 2011, the firm’s turnover has grown by 29%, representing strong organic, self-funded growth in Devon and Cornwall.

New scheme brings hope to local developers

A leading local commercial property lawyer has urged developers to act quickly to make the most of a government financing scheme for house builders, which opens on 14 May.
