A prestigious international karate seminar will come to Ottery St Mary next month, hosted by East Devon’s SYTL (Say Yes To Life) Karate Club. The Seiwakai International Karate Seminar is being held at LED’s Ottery Leisure Centre on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 September, with up to 150 local karate students and those from across the country taking part. In October, exetreme imagination – Exeter’s biennial festival of writing and stories – will unlock imaginations for young people across the city. Barbara Landis, artistic director of Chamber Opera Tours, found Jane Austen’s language so perfect that it begged to be adapted to theatrical lyrics. The adapted original musical drama of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, which first premiered at the Athenaeum Theatre in Chicago in 2011, has been touring internationally since 2013.
This summer, Chamber Opera Tours will arrive in Paignton to perform a one-night-only performance at the Palace Theatre on 22 September at 7.30pm, on the heels of several performances at the 2018 Jane Austen Festival in Bath.

A soldier of the First World War who was born and brought up in Exeter, will be remembered at a public event taking place in the Higher Cemetery of the city on Saturday 15th September, 100 years after he was killed in action.
Walter Hooper grew up at 97 Portland Street before he emigrated with his uncle to America in 1914, the First World War began just a few weeks later.
When United States joined the war in 1917 Walter enlisted with the American Expeditionary Force and served in France as a Private. He was killed in July 1918 aged 21 and was buried in France.
Spectators have 174km (108miles) of Devon’s roads to choose from when it comes to watching the Devon Stage Tour of Britain on Monday 3 September.
The race is being hosted by Devon County Council, supported by East Devon District Council and North Devon Council and working with Cranbrook Town Council and Barnstaple Town Council.
