Local hospice receives £5,000 from The Cadbury Foundation

North Devon Hospice has been selected by local employees at Mondelēz International’s Ernest Jackson site to receive a donation of £5,000.

Providing specialist care and support to those living with a life-limiting illness, the charity will be granted the substantial figure from The Cadbury Foundation, as part of its ‘Your Charity Your Choice’ scheme.

North Devon Hospice supports the whole family, when someone is affected by an incurable illness. The majority of support is provided in patients’ homes, while counselling and bereavement support is given to everyone involved...

Most companies in the South West are set to increase their investment in technology following the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A survey carried out by Exeter-based IT support and tech strategy experts Timewade has revealed that nearly two thirds (63%) of companies have increased investment in the short term to deal with challenges including remote working, cyber security and protecting data, and 50% will continue to increase investment beyond the next 12 months.

Stagecoach South West Managing Director Mike Watson has brushed off his drivers uniform to drive the number 2 bus route connecting Exeter with Dawlish, Teignmouth and Newton Abbot.

Mike Watson initially began at Stagecoach South West, in July 2013 and has been in the bus industry for 25 years. He began his career in 1996 in the service planning department at London Transport Buses. After five years in planning and procurement roles, Mike moved to Go Ahead subsidiary Metrobus as Assistant Operations Manager. This Easter Sunday (4 April), animal lovers will once again be able to catch up with the four-legged residents of The Donkey Sanctuary as its award-winning Sanctuary From Your Sofa event returns for another virtual day out with the charity’s donkeys.

Television star Caroline Quentin encourages all eligible patients to get vaccinated

Television star, Caroline Quentin, received her COVID-19 vaccination at Moorhayes Commuunity Centre in Tiverton, and urges others to do the same.

She said, "pleae GO and get your vaccination!"

Everyone over the age of 50, and those in at risk groups are entitled to recieve the vaccine, either through their GP or a mass vaccination centre.

If you are over 50, or at high risk of getting seriously ill from coronavirus, you can book an apointment via the National Booking Service website or by calling 119.

Would-be visitors cautioned not to travel too soon

The South West’s tourist industry and the emergency services are warning visitors against travelling to the region before lockdown measures are due to be relaxed on 12th April.

There are fears a minority of tourists might be tempted to travel early, before facilities are ready or attractions are open. Apart from the risk of catching or spreading COVID-19, a dangerous 'false start' to the tourist season will put unnecessary extra strain on the emergency services.

Exeter Cathedral School is once again celebrating the success of its Year 8 pupils, all of whom have been awarded places to leading senior schools, with 84% of pupils achieving at least one award.

Tireless learning disabilities campaigner marks his 104th birthday

Devon’s Major Geoff Bird (MBE), who has spent more than 50 years campaigning, championing, and raising money on behalf of those with learning disabilities, marks his 104th birthday on Friday (March 26).

He joined the Navy in 1940, transferred to the Army as a private before rising through the ranks in the Royal Hampshire Regiment, serving in both Italy and Greece.

He began raising money in the late 1960s alongside his late wife Molly following the birth of their severely disabled son Christopher.
