University students pessimistic about securing their dream job

Gen Z students are starting university pessimistic about their employment prospects, with only 20% believing they will secure their dream job, according to a study conducted by EY across the UK. The figure drops to 10% as students’ progress into the second and third year of their degree.

The study surveyed nearly 1,400 university students on their attitudes to university and the world of work, including universities such as Bristol, Bournemouth, Exeter and Bath, as well as the University of the West of England.

Exeter Army Careers Centre hosts Schools’ Challenge

For the first time since 2012, the Exeter Army Careers Centre is hosting the Devon & Somerset Schools’ Challenge.

As the name suggests the event is a competition between visiting local schools, where they will participate in a variety of Army themed exercises, designed to test and develop their communication skills, team-working and leadership. SWH Group National Skills Academy accredited for further 3 years

SWH Group’s National Skills Academy for Construction (NSAfC) has just received accreditation from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for a further three years.

The company’s academy, based in Exeter, has so far reached more than 4,500 young people to promote construction related careers.

Devon Chamber of Commerce to host Career Advice Fairs

Throughout March and April, Devon Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a number ‘Your Future’ Careers Fairs in conjunction with schools, colleges and local partners in the county, aimed at supporting the successful transition of young people from education to the world of work. The events, aimed at 14-24 year olds, form part of a programme of 250 England-wide career events being delivered by Accredited Chambers of Commerce and supported by the Skills Funding Agency.

Third of SW parents want their children to have a professional career

A third (33 per cent) of South West parents want their children to have professional careers, a poll from Action for Children has revealed with two thirds (65 per cent) wanting their children to go to university once their compulsory education is completed.

The results are from a survey of over 2000 parents across the UK, with the South West subsample showing that the second most popular sector behind professional was public services (11.7 per cent).
