Kruger coins and laptops stolen during Sidford burglary

Two distinctive 10 oz South African Kruger coins have been stolen during a burglary at Sidford. Police are appealing for witnesses after the home in Drakes Avenue was entered between 8.55 and 15.40 on Friday 16th November 2012 when the thieves managed to break in through a PVC door. In addition, they stole several items including electrical items, jewellery and camera equipment. It is likely that this was carried away in a distinctive black Sidmouth Rugby Club kit bag. Among the electrical items, two Asus 11” Shellbooks, an HP laptop and an ACER laptop were also stolen...

After a painfully drawn out count, with Devon and Cornwall the last in the country to declare, our new Police and Crime Commissioner has been announced as former naval officer Tony Hogg (Conservative).

Doorstep crime doubles in parts of the West Country

The amount of money lost to doorstep crime in parts of the West Country has doubled during the past two years, according to new figures.

Council trading standards teams in Devon, Torbay, North Somerset and Poole and have reported increases in complaints from residents about rogue traders.

In Devon just over £50,000 was reported to be lost to doorstep crime in 2010, whereas the figure this year is already almost £100,000.

Exeter teenager attacked after Ottery tar barrels event

Police have reported that a 16-year-old girl from Exeter was savagely beaten in Ottery St Mary following the recent tar barrels event on Monday 5th November.

The girl is said to have been involved in an altercation with a group of females earlier in the evening, and was grabbed from behind by a male while she was taking a shortcut near Broad Street. Carcass collector conviction upheld by Exeter Crown Court

A judge has dismissed an appeal by a South Devon-based licensed slaughter man and fallen stock collector who was convicted of offences under Animal By-Products regulations last month following an investigation by Devon County Council.

His Honour Judge Gilbert QC told Andrew Goatman, 33 of North Huish, South Brent, that he had already been dealt extremely leniently and there was no merit in his appeal. On 15 November, 37 police and crime commissioners will be elected in England along with four in Wales.

The PCCs, as they will be known, will be tasked with scrutinising their force and holding it to account. They will also set the budget, and hire and fire chief constables. The commissioners will be paid and are supposed to empower local people into having a say on how crime is tackled.

A recent study conducted by luxury travel company, eShores, shows that a third of UK tourists have had their belongings stolen while on holiday.

The study asked 1250 holidaymakers information about which destination they have had belongings stolen, what items they’ve had stolen, and the value of their loss. This gave shocking insights into the scale of theft while on holiday, with 58% of the thefts occurring to people while holidaying in Europe.

Conman uses 'fake life' to steal hundreds from Devon women

A conman who duped Exeter and Devon women for money by infiltrating their lives, has pleaded guilty to seven charges of fraud and theft between July and December last year.

Timothy Giles, 46, an unemployed former toilet cleaner, concocted a kaleidoscope of lies, claiming to be an airline pilot, a fire fighter, and a policeman to lure women into trusting him.

The charges he faced included ‘dishonestly making a false representation, namely pretending to be a qualified airline pilot, intending to make a money gain.’
