Axe Estuary Wetlands set to feature on BBC Countryfile

East Devon’s own Axe Estuary Wetlands are set to feature on popular BBC One programme Countryfile this weekend.

The programme is set to be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday 17 March at 6:30pm.

During their visit to East Devon on Friday 1 March, cameras caught up with the Axe Estuary Ringing Group, who were ringing birds following cannon netting at dawn; looked at salinity monitoring and control of...

Graham Brown resigns from East Devon District Council

Graham Brown has resigned his seat representing East Devon’s Feniton and Buckerell Ward with immediate effect following claims he made about the local planning system to undercover Daily Telegraph reporters.

Earlier today the council referred the matter to the police under the Bribery Act 2010 and its own policy on Fraud, Theft and Anti-Corruption, saying that the comments made by Mr Brown warranted independent examination by the police, who may choose to investigate further.

His resignation means there will be a by-election in the Ward, and the council will release more...

East Devon District Council encourages shoppers and visitors with reduced parking charges

Motorists in East Devon will soon be able to take advantage of cut price parking deals around the district as several trial offers get underway.

Axminster, Honiton, Sidmouth and Exmouth are all set to benefit from deals in specific local car parks aimed at encouraging longer visits to town centres and visitor attractions. It’s part of a trial which aims to find out what long term parking offers the council might be able to make. It aims to boost local trade and keep high streets healthy whilst not reducing the parking income it receives, as this is used to fund essential local...

Otterton Primary School pupils get to grips with local democracy at East Devon

Children from Otterton Primary School have been finding out what it’s like running a council.

Thirteen Year 6 students were welcomed by East Devon District Council on Friday 1 March, having arranged special activities such as debating a pretend planning application, deciding how to spend a hypothetical £5000 on community projects in Otterton and even designing the perfect councillor.

The council set up the event after an approach from the school, which had previously taken part in the annual "National Take Over Day" and wanted a new set of pupils to experience a similar...

Volunteers put their back into it at the Woods!

Volunteers from Axe Vale & District Conservation Society (AVDCS) and the Holyford Woodland Trust spent last Saturday in the glorious surroundings of Holyford Woods, working hard to create a new path through the Seaton Down Copse area of the woods.

Although it was a perfect day to be in the woods, the nature of the work was pretty tough – digging out steps and levelling out very stony ground on a steep wooded valley! The hard work was offset by the sight of bluebells shooting up throughout the woods showing that spring is truly on its way during a well-earned lunch break....

Feniton residents and councillors have been left reeling following news that another two applications for more homes have been submitted to East Devon District Council.

Still clearing up after recent flooding and issues with sewage, the village is facing another battle with developers who hope to gain permission for up to 120 homes on land at Ottery Road.

The plans follow the recent green light from the Planning Inspector to allow 50 homes on land adjacent to Louvigny Close in the village. The Wainhomes development was refused by EDDC and campaigners and fought hard to try...

Shared chief executive deal set to end

An arrangement that has seen EDDC sharing its Chief Executive with South Somerset District Council is set to come to an end after five years.

Mark Williams has been carrying out the dual role since February 2010, with both authorities sharing the costs on an equal basis. The arrangement was reviewed in 2013 and the contract renewed for a further three years.

A recommendation to provide the required contractual notice to East Devon will be made to the next Full Council of South Somerset District Council on 21 May. Should the recommendation be agreed, joint discussions will...

Council prepares to release documents that sparked tribunal

East Devon District Council has started making preparations to release documents containing background information about the proposed move of the council’s offices away from Knowle.

This follows a ruling by an appeal tribunal, calling on the council to divulge the information, but recognising the council's case that some sensitive words or passages should be blocked out – or ‘redacted’.

Whilst welcoming the tribunal’s recognition that there was some justification for withholding certain types of information, the council will, as instructed, now move to make public all six...
