The Tour – Devon looks forward to 10th anniversary by looking back

With around a month to go to the Devon Stage of the 10th anniversary Tour of Britain on Friday 20 September, Devon County Council is looking back at its involvement in previous editions of The Tour, while looking forward to welcoming Britain’s premier cycle race for a seventh time.

The Tour made its first foray into Devon in 2007 when the race crossed briefly into the county from Somerset, descending into Lynmouth and then tackling a King of the Mountains climb to Watersmeet, before returning to Somerset via Exmoor and onto the finish in Taunton.

Over £220,000 invested in East Devon's leisure facilities

Over £220,000 is being spent this summer on improving and upgrading two of East Devon's key leisure facilities.

Cllr Ian Thomas, Cabinet member for Economy said: "We are making a substantial investment in keeping our leisure facilities in tiptop condition whilst at the same time improving their energy efficiency and lowering running costs. Doing the work now during the summer holidays means that when autumn comes and people start looking to more indoor fitness pursuits everything will be in place.

Police seek whereabouts of missing 'high risk' Exeter man

Richard Henderson, born 23 August 1970, went missing on 8 August 2013 from his home address in Sandford Walk, Exeter. His neighbours believed he was due to go camping on 7 August 2013 and he may be in possession of a tent and camping equipment.

Mr Henderson is described as a white male, about 5ft 11in tall, of slim build with short cropped fair hair, he has links to Exmouth, Exeter and the Dawlish areas.

Any campsites across Devon and Cornwall may have been occupied and Police would urge their employees to take note of Mr Henderson’s image.

Planning bid launched to change the face of Exmouth seafront

Plans to change the face of Exmouth seafront for residents, visitors and businesses alike have been formally put forward for consideration.

Elements of a new £10 million ‘Queen’s Drive Leisure Zone’ could include a Waterports Centre, a large indoor and outdoor play and recreation area, retail areas, a public square and parking for over 200 cars.

East Devon District Council has submitted the planning application following months of study and preparation, including a public consultation which gathered views from over 500 local people and organisations.

Jurassic Classic soars to success

Over 1,000 cyclists took to their saddles last weekend (Sunday 11 August) for the second Jurassic Classic cycling event organised by Prostate Cancer UK, raising over £100,000 for the charity and putting the Jurassic Classic firmly on the cycling map.

Riders of all abilities – aged from 12 to 70 and from all over the country - gathered in East Devon to take part in the 100mile, 100km or 50km routes experiencing fantastic weather and stunning scenery along the Jurassic coastline. The event was a sell-out, with the number of riders taking part on the day exceeding all expectations....

Travel Devon roadshows helping tackle congestion

More than 3,000 people in Devon have so far been helped with advice and support from Travel Devon Roadshows.

More than 120 of the free roadshows, organised by Devon County Council, have been held in Exeter, Exmouth, Newton Abbot and Totnes in the past 15 months.

The Travel Devon roadshows are one of the projects developed through Devon County Council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund which aims to support jobs and businesses by tackling congestion and promoting greater use of sustainable travel.

Teenager arrested after fire damages Exmouth bungalow

A 17-year-old boy from Exmouth has been arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft, arson and criminal damage following a fire at a property in Kay Close, Exmouth on Wednesday 7 August. No-one was in the property at the time.

The teenager has been released on police bail until 5 November, to appear at Heavitree Road police station.

The crime number is KE/13/1826.

Exmouth bungalow fire being treated as suspicious

A joint police and fire service investigation has been launched following a fire at a bungalow in Exmouth which was severely damaged.

The fire broke out at the property in Kay Close, Exmouth at around 8pm on Wednesday 7 August 2013.

No-one was in the property at the time.

The fire, which is being treated as suspicious, spread to other properties causing smoke damage.

Three residents from neighbouring properties were evacuated but no-one was injured.

Local officers are doing house-to-house enquiries in the area.
