New banks in place to recycle energy-saving bulbs

East Devon residents can now recycle their energy-saving light bulbs thanks to a partnership between the district council, town councils and recycling specialists Recolight.

New bulb banks have been installed at the following locations across the district:-

  • Axminster Town Council, The Guildhall, West Street, Axminster, EX13 5NX
  • Budleigh Salterton Town Council, Station Road, Budleigh Salterton, EX9 6RJ
  • East Devon Business Centre, Heathpark Way, Heathpark, Honiton, EX14 1SF

Beach Rescue Club is handed keys to new hut

Exmouth Beach Rescue Club were officially handed the keys to their new lifeguard hut at Orcombe Point at the weekend.

On Sunday Councillor Tom Wright, EDDC’s Deputy Portfolio Holder for the Environment, handed over one of the former Council Lifeguard huts for the club to use during the summer season at Orcombe Point. The club has had to put quite a bit of work into making the hut usable again as it has been standing idle for several years.

Despite the work required to get it up to scratch, the Beach Rescue Club will find that the hut fulfils a very important role for them....

Time to go fishing - for your own equipment!

If this is your fishing equipment, the time has come to catch it and carry it off!

The nets, floats and weights have been stacked without permission at East Devon District Council’s Camperdown depot in Exmouth.

EDDC has been happy to turn a blind eye until now, but with improvement work now planned it all needs to be removed.

The Council is now politely requesting that whoever owns the equipment makes arrangements to have it removed before 31 August 2013. Anything remaining after this date will have to be disposed of without further notice.

Imaginative writing workshop at A la Ronde

Why not take advantage of a long summer evening by attending an imaginative writing workshop at A la Ronde?

The workshop, held from 5.30pm to 8.30pm on Thursday 4 July, is led by short story writer, Meredith Miller.

Fiction and fiction and non-fiction prose is the focus and Meredith hopes to use the unique history of the property as a starting point to inspire writers of all levels to develop their voice and use their imagination. To get those literary and creative thought processes flowing there will be a pre-workshop guided tour of the house at 4pm.

From a tiny egg, via a crawly caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly, come and celebrate the butterflies and moths that are native to Britain on 5 and 6 July at A la Ronde, near Exmouth.

The Big Butterfly Weekend, which runs from 11am–4pm, will have experts on hand to help you discover all sorts of interesting facts about these fascinating creatures. You will be able to take a guided walk in the wildflower meadow to find out how to spot and identify some of our native species (take your own binoculars); and you can learn about the plants that attract butterflies.

Firefighters visit boat owners during Boat Safety Week (25-31 May)

Devon has a variety of waterways from marinas, canals, lakes, coastal inlets, harbours and quays. Throughout Boat Safety week 25- 31 May, firefighters will be handing out leaflets and talking to boat owners to ensure they make vital safety checks, helping them to protect themselves, their passengers as well as their boat.

Beer children choose their exciting new play equipment

A much anticipated revamp of an uninspiring playpark in Beer has taken a step closer to completion as local children have chosen their favourite design.

Beer Parish Council and East Devon District Council have been working closely together and with local people to make £17,500 worth of eagerly anticipated improvements to the Ash Hill play area. £7,500 has been contributed by developers through Section 106 funding for play.
