Exmouth Town win rearranged friendly

Town followed up a respectable league draw against Launceston on Saturday with a clinical win in this midweek friendly against lower division opponents.

The fixture was originally due to be played at Minster Park as part of pre-season, but was postponed due to heavy rainfall.

SWPL Division One East side St Martins had a trio of early chances but were halted at the six yard box, and it was the Premier division hosts who soon took the lead.

No. 9 Matt Dawson was left with a tap in after the away keeper parried a strike to his feet in the seventh minute.

Sexton – the younger brother of Ireland and British Lions fly-half Jonathan Sexton – settled into Devon earlier this week having seen a playing opportunity in France shudder to a halt due to contract problems.

England are one of the two oldest national teams in football; alongside Scotland, whom they played in the world’s first international football match in 1872. They were World Cup hosts and winners in 1966 and semi-finalists in Italy in 1990, though it’s arguable whether they are still a top ten team in the world right now, even though they’re officially ranked at #10 in the FIFA World Rankings. Most Capped Player: Peter Shilton, 125 (1970 – 1990) Top Goal Scorer: Bobby Charlton, 49 (1968 – 1970)
