Exeter students compete in Debating Matters national final

Exeter College students are preparing to descend on the Museum of London nexet weekend, 1-3 July for the Debating Matters National Final, a weekend of intense debate in what has been dubbed ‘the toughest debating competition in the country’.

Competing against 11 other schools from across the UK, ultimately only one school will be proven victorious and crowned Debating Matters National Champions 2015/2016.

Student rent prices soar in Exeter

Students at the University of Exeter are facing increased rent payments as on-campus accommodation prices soar ahead for the 2016/17 academic year.

The cheapest accommodation, Moberly House, is set to close in the summer for a new self-catered residence. Students fear this could be the end of affordable accommodation halls.

Phil Attwell, Director of Campus Services at the university said: “The building is in need of some investment… we would like to enhance the facilities on offer by providing high quality accommodation.”

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Exeter College Performing Arts students are bringing to life Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in their own unique adaption of the much-loved classic.

The show is the culmination of two years hard work by Exeter College students studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts and consolidates all they have learnt with a final performance.

The week long programme sees them perform their own adaption, which has been written by the students themselves, of the children’s novel at The Barnfield Theatre from the 16th to the 22nd May.

Students from Exeter College honed their debating skills and awareness of legal issues with a debate on divorce and the role of women in modern society organised by young lawyers from a leading local firm. Organised by Exeter-based Stephens Scown LLP’s young marketing group, the debate, which took place on 20 April, centred on divorce and separation and the challenges facing working women who are increasingly important breadwinners in the family as well as mothers. Greens call for halt to more luxury student flat developments in Exeter

Exeter Greens have called for a halt to the continued growth of purpose-built luxury student accommodation, saying the speed and scale of the developments poses risks to the mix and diversity of the city centre; the provision of affordable accommodation and to student mental health.

Exeter College beat schools from across the West of England and South Wales to win place in final of national schools debating competition for second year running

Last Wednesday, sixth-form students from six schools from across the West of England and South Wales fought it out for a place at the Debating Matters national final to be held at the Museum of London in July. Exeter School team accelerate into National F1 final

Exeter School's F1 in Schools team, Burning Rubber, has won a place in the National Final of the STEM competition.

The team of six Year 10 pupils took four prizes at the F1 in Schools South West Regional Final held at Exeter University on Tuesday 1 March.

Burning Rubber began preparing for the F1 in Schools competition back in July and eight months later the team, accompanied by Dr Rowland and Miss Offord, have made it into the Final.

Exeter pupils commended by Goethe Institut

Pupils from Exeter School’s Year 9 German classes took part in a variety of competitions on the theme of presents organised by the Goethe Institut in the run-up to Christmas.

Two groups of pupils were commended for their entries: one group wrote the speech bubbles for a comic strip and won sunglasses; the other recorded a story and won earphones.

Both groups also received pencil cases with a variety of goodies inside.

British Biology Olympiad success for Exeter pupils

Ten Exeter School pupils have been awarded medals in the demanding British Biology Olympiad in which over 7,000 pupils took part, with one Upper Sixth pupil qualifying for the next round. Upper Sixth pupil Suraj Ghandi scored the top mark in school and is one of the top 150 pupils in the country. Head Girl Rebecca Richardson also achieved a gold medal.
