The hunt is on to find Exeter's finest design

The search is on to find the best design in Exeter.

People are being asked to nominate their favourite building, structure, piece of art, landscaping project or public realm improvements that has been completed during the past year.

Exeter City Council has launched the Browne Jacobson Exeter Design Award, which will be held once a year, to find the best design that 'Makes a positive contribution to the visual appearance of Exeter'. The award is being sponsored by law firm, Browne Jacobson.

Praise for Bikeability cycle training in Devon

Bikeability cycle training in Devon has been given a glowing endorsement from parents whose children have taken part in the course.

A survey by Devon County Council and the Plymouth School Sports Partnership found that 95% of parents rated the cycle training in Devon highly or very highly.

The effect of providing Bikeability in Devon is also demonstrated by the fact that 64% of pupils who had completed the course would now ride their bikes three or more times a week.

Local crime writer Simon Hall to visit Exeter Central Library

Exeter Central Library will welcome local author and BBC reporter Simon Hall next week.

Simon has written several novels in which a Plymouth-based television reporter and detective work together to solve a series of extraordinary crimes.

He will be at the library on Tuesday 7 May at 7pm to discuss his new book ‘Shadows of Justice’ in which a television reporter is drawn into a case and forced to fight a desperate battle to stop ever more victims falling into the shadows of justice – himself and his friends amongst them.

Piling rigs move onto South Devon Link Road site

The construction of the South Devon Link Road steps up a notch next month as piling rigs are due to move onto the site.

Devon County Council and Torbay Council have announced that two piling rigs will begin to help construct the new road.

The ‘Continuous Flight Auger’ (CFA) piling rigs, large scale equipment used to build foundations and retaining walls, will be used at various locations along the length of the new road.

The CFA rigs cut a pile with a drill action, and are quieter than rigs which use a hammer action.

Devon waste management secures £5.5 million funding deal for growth and leadership change

Devon Waste Management, the county’s leading independent waste management business, has secured a £5.5million finance package from the Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking team in Plymouth to support its continued expansion.

Steve Hadley who was previously Commercial Director, has also taken over ownership and management of the business from Collin Hickling, who has left to pursue other interests. Steve will continue to be supported at board level by Devon Waste Management’s Chairman, Allan Vodden, and Non-Executive Director, Stuart Crebo.

Tai Chi - it's as easy as ABC!

Free Tai Chi instruction will now be available at the opening event for the much improved Jubilee Gardens on the seafront in Seaton (in front of the clock tower) on Saturday 4 May. There will also be live musicians and chess lessons on offer.

Syria's Prime Minister survives Damascus bomb attack

A large explosion, thought to be a bomb attack, has occurred this morning in Mezzah, Damascus, local and state media reported.

Syrian State TV claimed there were casualties, however numbers have not been confirmed. According to local media, the target of the bombing this morning was the Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader Al-Halqi who survived the assassination attempt.
