East Devon District Council’s Leader has welcomed the opening of a new pharmacy for residents of Cranbrook.
The new facility is located within the Younghayes Centre, the community building that was completed soon after the first cluster of homes was built at Cranbrook, and is the latest in a series of firsts for the new town, which is rapidly taking shape.
Councillor Paul Diviani said: “I’m delighted that the long-awaited pharmacy is now open for business. It will be much more convenient for Cranbrook residents to get their prescriptions from a local pharmacy, as well as...

On behalf of East Devon District Council, Councillor Frances Newth has today (6 March) presented a cheque for £150 to the Sid Valley Memory Café, which is Fields of Sidmouth’s charity of the year.
The council’s donation to the Sid Valley Memory Café is by way of a thank you to Fields for the provision of their excellent toilet facilities, which the public has been using while the council’s own toilet facilities in Market Place have been refurbished.
Councillor Frances Newth said: “I am delighted to give this cheque on behalf of the council to the Sid Valley Memory Café,...
East Devon District Council’s Cabinet will next week (11 March) be asked, finally, to recommend that the authority sells its Knowle headquarters in Sidmouth and moves to the dual-site solution at Honiton and Exmouth. This would be the culmination of the council’s long-standing Moving and Improving project.
If Cabinet agrees, the matter will be analysed by a joint meeting of two scrutinising committees the following day (12 March) and a final decision will be made by Full Council at a special meeting on 25 March. The timings have been set to avoid this major decision getting caught...
East Devon District Council is doggedly continuing to encourage responsible pet ownership in the district.
Following a successful series of annual dogs’ days out, where owners and their best friends could enjoy a social gathering whilst learning more about getting the most from their pets, the council’s environmental health team has produced an occasional newsletter covering many aspects of dog ownership.
And to celebrate the launch of The Daily Wag, the council has donated some of the proceeds of the doggie events to two charities that care for and re-home unwanted animals...
The Housing Service at East Devon District Council has found a way to maintain many of the support services for elderly and vulnerable tenants, which came under threat following cuts of around half a million pounds in funding from Devon County Council for the coming year alone.
The new scheme, which comes into effect on 6 April, has the approval of East Devon’s Housing Review Board and is aimed at minimising the impact of the cuts on over 1,300 elderly and vulnerable tenants in the district. It follows careful examination of the options and a comprehensive consultation exercise...
East Devon District Council’s Countryside Team has joined forces with Bicton College to provide work experience placements to Countryside Management students. This relationship will give the next generation of rangers an insight into habitat and visitor management across all the council’s nature reserves including Knapp Copse, Holyford Woods and the Axe Estuary Wetlands. The students will gain invaluable skills in conservation, running events, working with volunteers and delivering education sessions.
Community spirit and friendly people make it a special place to live!
Survey results reveal that East Devon’s new community of Cranbrook has continued to remain happy overall during the past 12 months. Results from the second survey of this kind show that community spirit and friendly people are what makes Cranbrook special.
Residents responded to questions in the Cranbrook Community Questionnaire across five sections entitled your community; services; Younghayes Centre; outdoor activity; and about you. The first one was carried out at the same time in 2013. The headline...

Just before Christmas, three boys from the SWITCH youth club, run by East Devon District Council community development workers, came into the council offices at Knowle to work on their winning logo design with a professional graphic artist – and to collect their prizes.
The logo is for a joint partnership project where HALFF – a food charity based in Axminster – have been encouraging the young people to work together, cooking food from scratch. They will also be creating their own recipes and turning them into a book.
The name they came up with for the project is FOODtastic...
