Dozens of firefighters tackle huge blaze

Dozens of firefighers have been tackling a blaze at a breakers' yard at Gilbrook Road, Woodbury, near Exeter.

Crews were still on the scene this morning making the area safe.

Residents were evacuated yesterday afternoon and at one point 10 appliances were in attendance.

Meanwhile, the Devon and Cornwall Police helicopter surveyed the scene, as a large crowd gathered on the ground.

Hole in the Wall owners inundated with offers of help

The owners of an Exeter pub severely damaged in a blaze have been inundated with offers help from business contacts, friends and customers.

George Sloan and his business partner Rob Skinner have spent the last two weeks over seeing a massive clean-up operation.

But they said they had been touched by the amount of support and encouragement they have received, sometimes from complete strangers.

"We've had electricians, plumbers, decorators and even Exeter Chiefs players, many of whom were regulars, offering to help," said George, pictured in one of the burnt out rooms...

Fire strikes at second pub in Devon

Firefighters from Exeter Danes Castle, Middlemoor and Topsham were called out to a Clyst Honition pub after a domestic property inside caught on fire.

On arrival, at 5pm Saturday afternoon, crews immediately deployed two breathing Apparatus wearers to prevent the spread of fire within the flat.

The fire was extinguished using one hose reel jet, a positive pressure ventilation fan and thermal imaging camera were also used.

The cause of the fire was accidental.

Hole In The Wall may shut for up to 3 months

The owner of Exeter's Hole In The Wall pub told the Daily it could be three months before it can reopen.

George Sloan (pictured) said the blaze had caused severe damage which was compounded by the work undertaken by firefighters to make the building safe.

He is now talking to companies about what will be a 'huge' clean up operation.

It is believed the fire started at the rear of the building at around 4am yesterday (Friday) but it's not thought to be suspicious.

Firefighters from Exeter called to a house fire in St. David’s this morning have confirmed that it was started deliberately. 3 fire appliances from Danes Castle & Middlemoor were sent to Mount Dinham at 8:38am following a request from the Police for their attendance to a fire in an electrical cupboard at a property. After investigating, fire crews confirmed that there was a small fire in a ground floor electrical cupboard, involving coaxial cable, newspaper and clothing. Fire at Devon caravan park

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police were called to the Lady's Mile Caravan Park in Dawlish this morning after a car was found on fire.

The fire service were alerted to the incident at 3.14 am, and on arrival found a vehicle to be well alight along with approximately ten feet of fence panel. They got to work fighting the fire using two sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets. The car was extinguished using the above equipment but was severely damaged by fire.

Police also attended as it was believed to have been deliberate ignition.

Firefighters tackle chip shop blaze

Firefighters wearing breathing apperatus tackled a blaze at a chip shop in Crediton.

The alarm was raised at just after 7.30pm and two appliances were mobilised from Crediton and an additional appliance from Exeter Danes Castle.

On arrival crews found smoke billowing from the Trawler's Catch in High Street and set about using two breathing apperatus, one hose reel jet, and a covering jet for safety. The fire involved a deep fat fryer and a steel flue.

Crews increased breathing apperatus to four and a dry powder extinguisher was also in use.

Woman rushed to RD&E after Tiverton collision

A woman has been rushed to RD&E hospital following a serious collision near Tiverton. Emergency services were called to the scene, near Tiverton Golf Club, at 8:37am this morning (Tuesday 27 May). Two vehicles were involved in the collision one of which had left the road and overturned in a field. One casualty was taken by ambulance to RD&E hospitial to be treated for head and chest injuries. Post Hill is currently closed in both directions between the Uplowman Road junction and the Crown Hill junction. A male casualty was treated for injuries at the scene.

Barn destroyed in major blaze

Three fire engines from Middlemoor, Danes Castle and Cullumpton, a water carrier and a hydraulic platform from Danes Castle were sent to deal with a fire in a barn at a farm in Broadclyst just after midnight.

On arrival crews confirmed the barn 32 metres x 15 metres was well alight and got to work extinguishing the fire using compressed air foam and hose reel jets.

There were 20 bags of ammonia nitrate in the barn and a hazardous materials officer gave advice on these. The Environmental Protection Unit was requested to attend, and mobilised from Taunton.

Firefighters tackle forage harvester blaze

Firefighters from both Middlemoor and North Tawton were called to tackle a forage harvester fire which took place at Ruxford Barton, Sandford, Crediton last night.

The incident, which occured just after 10pm, saw firefighters extinguish the harvester which had become extremely alight.

Crews used two hose reel jets and small tools to extinguish the fire. Mobile lighting was also used to make the harvester safe.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirm this was an accidental fire, believed to be caused by an electrical fault.
